Privacy Policy

Sojourner

Last updated: 27 September 2026

1. Overview

  1. We respect your privacy and comply with applicable laws. This policy explains:
    • what data the app uses;
    • why it uses it;
    • where that data is stored and who processes it; and
    • your rights.
  2. Sojourner is designed to be private by default. No account is required, and your travel history, location data, and passport details are stored on your device and are never uploaded to our servers.
  3. This policy applies to users worldwide. Depending on where you live, additional privacy rights may apply under local law.
  4. This app is not intended for use by children under the age of 18.
  5. Palisade Studios is the data controller for any personal information we process in connection with the app.

2. Information we collect and process

  1. We do not require an account, and we do not collect your name, email address, or other contact details through the app.
  2. The app stores the following information locally on your device:
    • stays, countries, and dates you record or confirm;
    • location data used to detect when you arrive in a new destination;
    • transport, routes, border crossings, and trip purposes you log; and
    • passport and visa details you choose to record.
  3. With your permission, the app uses your device's location services, including geofencing, to detect when you settle in a new destination. Location is processed on your device only. You can disable location access at any time in your device settings and add stays manually instead.
  4. If you use your device's backup features (such as iCloud or Google backups), app data may be included in those backups. Backups are governed by the privacy policy of your device or platform provider.
  5. If you contact us directly, we will process the information you provide (such as your email address and the contents of your message) to respond to you.
  6. Our legal basis for processing includes:
    • providing the service;
    • your consent; and
    • legitimate interests in operating and supporting the app.

3. How we use your data

  1. Information stored on your device is used by the app to:
    • calculate days spent per country using your chosen residency method;
    • automatically log stays and prompt you when you travel;
    • generate travel statistics, calendars, and milestones; and
    • track passport usage and visa days.
  2. We do not have access to your travel history, location data, or passport details.
  3. We do not sell or provide access to your data to third parties. We do not show ads or send newsletters.

4. Third-party processors

  1. Because your data stays on your device, no third party receives your travel history, location data, or passport details from us. We rely on the following third parties to distribute the app:
    • Apple App Store / Google Play – app distribution and, where applicable, payment processing.
  2. These providers process data under their own privacy policies and security standards.

5. International data transfers

  1. Your travel data is stored on your device and is not transferred by us. Any information you send us directly (for example, by email) may be processed by service providers outside New Zealand. We take reasonable steps to ensure appropriate safeguards are in place.

6. Data retention

  1. Data stored in the app remains on your device until you delete it or uninstall the app. As we do not hold a copy of your data, we are unable to access, recover, or delete it on your behalf.
  2. We retain correspondence you send us only as long as needed to respond to you or meet legal requirements.

7. Your rights

  1. You have the right to:
    • know what personal information we collect and why;
    • request access to, correction of or deletion of your personal information;
    • restrict or object to certain processing;
    • request a copy of your personal information in a portable format;
    • withdraw your consent at any time; and
    • complain to a relevant data protection authority.
  2. As your travel data is stored on your device, you can view, edit, or delete it directly within the app. For any personal information we hold (such as correspondence), you can contact us to exercise these rights.
  3. If you are located in New Zealand, you may complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.
  4. If you are located in the European Union or United Kingdom, you may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
  5. We do not sell or share personal information as defined under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA). California residents may request access to or deletion of their personal information by contacting us.

8. Security

  1. Your data is protected by your device's built-in security features. We recommend keeping your device secured with a passcode or biometric lock. No system is completely secure, and you use the app at your own risk.

9. Changes

  1. We may update this policy from time to time.
